The collection’s name, Itapagipe (pronounced ee-tah-pah-ZHEE-pay), comes from the Tupi words for "flat stone in the river." It represents a foundation, a base upon which so much of Salvador's identity rests.

"Paripe" comes from the Tupi words pará (river/sea) and -pe or -ipe (shallow/in), meaning "shallow river," "river of sand," or "where river meets sea." Paripe is a coastal Salvador neighborhood located where fresh water historically met the bay—a transition zone between land and water. I chose this name for the backpack because it embodies the idea of transitions and bridges.
